Waldemar W. "Reds" Poppe, Sr.

Born: Died: 3/22/2010 Mr. Waldemar W. Poppe, Sr. (Reds), age 75, of Delaware City, DE, died on Monday, March 22, 2010, at Christiana Hospital. Born in Delaware City on July 2, 1934, Reds was a son of the late Adolph W. Poppe and Luise M. Ehrhardt Poppe. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War as a Private E-1 in the 736th AAA Gun Battalion. In civilian life, he was a millwright by trade and made his career with Occidental Chemical Company in Delaware City, where he retired. A lifelong resident of Delaware City, Reds was an active member of the local community. He was a 58-year Life Member of the Delaware City Fire Company, having joined the department on November 16, 1953. During his fire service tenure, he served as the companys rescue captain among other positions. He was also a script holder with the Delaware City Recreation Club and a former member of the Delaware City Lions Club. Well-known by family and friends for his industrious, capable, and helpful manner, he was greatly admired for his impeccable work ethic and dedication to a job well done. He enjoyed woodworking and could always be found in his workshop taking on some new and interesting project. He was devoted to animals throughout his life and, in recent years, particularly looked forward to feeding squirrels. Most of all, Reds was a devoted family man who delighted more than anything else in spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Waldemar Wally W. Poppe, Jr. (Tammy) of Delaware City; his daughter, Georgiana Williams of Delaware City; his brothers, Hans Poppe (Betty) of Elizabethtown, KY; and Alan Poppe (Ethel) of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Anna Williams, Katie Poppe, and Will Poppe; former son-in-law, Paul Williams of Hockessin; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William Poppe, Sr. and Adolph Poppe, Jr. Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday, March 29, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
