W. Jean Harmon

W. Jean Harmon, age 76, longtime resident of St. Georges, DE, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. The world lost an amazing, opinionated, hard-headed, willful, beautiful, sparkly, loving, wonderful woman, in Jeanne!! It had recently been said that she was impossible to forget and once she knew you she knew you forever!! She would make you feel like you were her best friend and the most important person in the world! What a legacy!! She will be missed by many and never forgotten. She fought hard for a very long time and knew when she was too tired to fight any more!! Quality of life was way more important to her than quantity. Look out heaven, with her glitter on her halo and sparkly wings. Rest well!! A native Delawarean, Jean was born in Wilmington on April 29, 1940, and was the daughter of the late John C. and Bonnie W. (Walker) Harmon. She was a graduate of Middletown High School and later proudly served her country as a member of the U.S. Navy WAVES from 1958 until 1962. During her military service, Jean received career training at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and after her honorable discharge, accepted a position as a physical therapist with the Delaware Curative Workshop where she worked for the next 38 years. She was a longtime member of the St. Georges Historical Society, the Mae Hightower Vandamm Society and St. Georges United Methodist Church. Jean enjoyed visiting the Playhouse Theater, needlepoint, reading, collecting old photos of St. Georges, hosting parties and sitting poolside. Her motto to live by was, Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other; body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, while screaming “ ˜Woo-Hoo! What a ride!’ Jean is survived by her brother and best friend, John “Jack” W. Harmon also of St. Georges, DE; many befriended children; and many special friends whom she considered family. A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, June 27, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10:30 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to the St. Georges United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, St. Georges, DE 19733.
