Ryan Garrett Tobin

Ryan Garrett Tobin, the bravest boy we were honored to know has passed away at the age of 17 after a difficult battle with osteosarcoma. Ryan was diagnosed with metastatic osteosarcoma at the age of 15 and put on a brave face from the first moment. He remained positive and smiling throughout treatment, his wonderful personality shining through every moment. As a young child, Ryan loved playing outside, riding his bike, fishing and being with family. As he grew into a teenager, he became an exceptional LEGO builder, with an amazing collection of Star Wars LEGOs. He also loved the game of basketball and made the High School basketball team in his Freshman year prior to his diagnosis. He and his father never missed watching a Sixer’s game on TV and he especially loved watching Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey play. He was an amazing golfer with a natural swing who could easily beat his father, uncle and grandfather who had all been playing for years. Ryan was preceded in death by his mother, Lisa (Stiffler) Tobin. He is survived by his father, Kyle; sister, Morgan; and stepmother, Cathy, all of Middletown; grandparents, Betty and Joel Stiffler of Dover; uncle, Brian Tobin (Lauren); cousins, Emma and Kate of Newark; stepbrothers, Ryan Murphy of Pittsburgh, PA and Aidan Murphy of Bloomsburg, PA; grandparents, Betsy and Bill Papale of Hilton Head Island, SC; aunt, Maggie Looney (Jason); cousins, Connor and Emma of North Chesterfield, VA; uncle, Billy Papale (Amy); and cousins, Lauren and Liam of Simsbury, CT. We also want to acknowledge Ryan’s best friend Sam Lintz. He stood by him and was incredibly important and supportive of Ryan. An open house to celebrate Ryan’s life has been planned for Sunday, May 15, from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Historic Odessa Bank, 201 Main St., Odessa, DE 19730. Ryan’s favorite color was orange, and he loved vibrant colors, so we ask that you wear bright, vibrant colors in honor of Ryan. You are also encouraged to bring pictures and share fun stories of your encounters with Ryan.
