Rosalee A. "Sue" Scannell

Rosalee A. “Sue” Scannell, age 81, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021. Born in Pontiac, MI, on November 24, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Leland Earl and Anna Marie (West) Brown. Sue made her career as a dental assistant for White Clay Dental Associates, Dr. Raymond Para, DDS, Stout/Ralston DDS, and Dr. Robert Hooper, DDS, before retiring. She loved her family, and never failed to tell everyone about her sons and grandchildren while she had them in the dental chair. Sue was very into her Christian beliefs and a longtime member of St. John/Holy Angels RC Parish. She made many friends and connections at church that she enjoyed being involved with up until her passing. Sue was involved in many ministries at the parish, from sports to ladies and widowers’ groups, and was also a eucharistic minister to shut-ins and nursing home patrons for several years. She was a huge supporter of Newark High School, especially their football program. Sue served various roles in the booster program, and was very instrumental with her husband, John, in putting up the first set of lights at the Newark High School football field. She was well known in her younger years for opening up her family home and pool to friends on her children’s teams and clubs. Sue was a patron of youth sports and served various roles within the leagues her sons belonged to. She had weekly pre-game spaghetti dinners during football season at her home, that are still talked about by the players from that era. Sue also enjoyed going to youth sporting events and cheering for her grandchildren. She loved to travel and has visited almost every U.S. state as well as numerous foreign countries. Sue traveled extensively with her young children in their family RV. She also took pleasure in spending time working in her yard on her flowers and shrubs, while keeping her pool sparkling clean. Sue was very proud of the dream home she and her husband built; they had planned the project for years and poured over every detail. She loved to tend to her home and found joy in keeping it sparkling clean. In addition to her parents, Sue was proceeded in death by her husband, John L. Scannell, Sr.; daughter, Sharen Scannell; and siblings, Ira Brown and Malcolm Brown. She is survived by her children, Kevin D. Scannell (Jill) of Newark, John L. “Kip” Scannell, Jr. (Erika) of Florida and Karen Molina of Corpus Christi, TX; siblings, Grace Martin of Pontiac, MI and Douglas Brown (Lillian) of DePere, WI; 12 grandchildren; a host of great and great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, April 9, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, followed by a memorial service at 11 am. Inurnment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE. Face masks will be required for all in attendance.
