Kelvin Elizabeth Mustain Floyd

Born: 11/22/1918 Died: 12/13/2011 After a brief hospital stay and a very-happily-lived life, Kelvin Elizabeth Mustain Floyd, 93 years old, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 13, 2011. The daughter of Emma Maybelle Newman Mustain and Robert Jasper Mustain, and sister to four brothers (Bob, Hidy, Otwa, and Landon Mustain), Kelvin was born on November 22, 1918 and raised in her beloved hometown of Danville, VA, where she studied music and business at Averett College and hosted a weekly radio program. After her marriage to military careerist Frederick E. Floyd, she lived in various states from Florida to Washington as well as in Karlsruhe, Germany where her family was selected Military Family of the Year in 1955. At each location, she was always active in the community…bowling, golfing, and avidly playing bridge. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a lifetime of friends. Kelvin loved music. She sang and played the piano joyously, and passed her love of music on to those all around her. She directed children’s choirs for the Keen Street Baptist Church in Danville, VA, as well as for the Paul Revere Post Chapel in Karlsruhe, Germany. Ever a lover of beauty, she won numerous prizes for floral arrangement in Fort Knox, KY. When the family settled in Newark, DE in 1961, she (Kelly to many) worked as Corporation Secretary for Eugene A. Delle Donne as he developed the Fairfield and Fairfield Crest communities in Newark. After retiring from that position, Kelvin worked in the administration of the ACA unit at DuPont’s Silverside Road facility. She simultaneously completed her real estate license. In the Newark community, she was a leading member of the Newark chapter of Soroptimist International. This group of local women founded the Newark Senior Center during her tenure. Later she worked as coordinator of the Meals on Wheels program at the Newark Senior Center and served on the Newark Senior Center Board of Directors. She was active in local and national politics, and served her community as an election and census official for decades. Kelvin loved Jazzercise and Curves, and practiced yoga into her 80s. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark. Kelvin is survived by her daughters Genie Lee Floyd and Kay Elizabeth, both of Newark; her grandson William R. Crossan III (and his wife Amy and children Rawlee and Cash) of Austin, TX; her grandson Jesse Lee Crossan of Tampa, FL; and her grandson Luke Frederick Crossan of Newark; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews who knew her fondly as “Aunt Sissy.” A celebration of life memorial service will be held for Kelvin in the new year 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Meals on Wheels program at the Newark Senior Center, 200 White Chapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713.
