Johnny (John) Hampton

Johnny (John) Hampton, son of Joshua Hampton Sr. and Evelyn Mable Conway, was born June 7, 1955, in Philadelphia, PA, both of whom preceded him in death. He went home to be with the Lord, suddenly, on Sunday August 18, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Karen V. Higgins. John grew up in Philadelphia, PA. He was one of six children, brothers, Joshua Hampton, Jr. (deceased); Robert Allen Hampton, Sr; and Lionel Hampton; sisters, Mary Catherine Brinkley; and Elsie Diane Johnson. He attended schools in Philadelphia where he graduated from Germantown High School in 1973. Shortly after graduation he joined the U. S. Air Force where he served active duty for four years and twenty years as an Air Force reservist at Willow Grove Air Force Base, Willow Grove PA. He achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. John desired to further his education and attended Bowie State University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2004. John retired from Johnson & Johnson in June 2017, after 39½ years. He started as a warehouse worker, progressed to coating and printing technician, and upon obtaining his degree, achieved the position of Logistics Analyst. After retirement John engaged in volunteer work as a USO service representative at Dover Air Force Base, and with the Port of Wilmington Seamen’s Center. He fostered his love of music by taking bass guitar lessons and improved his communication skills with Spanish lessons. John was raised in the church and joined Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA, February 1, 1970; eventually serving as an Elder. John continued to be active in the church wherever he lived. Upon moving to the State of Maryland he joined Mt Oak United Methodist Church, Bowie, MD, where he served in the Men’s and Small Group ministries. When he moved to Delaware he attended and served at Love of Christ Church, Bear, DE and St Georges United Methodist Church, St Georges, DE where he most recently worshipped. In August 1993, John met the love of his life, Karen, through a dating service, where he had his one and only date through the dating service, because he knew she was that special one. On New Years Eve 1993 John proposed to Karen and they married April 22, 1995. John and Karen supported each other in their career endeavors and their love for church, family and travel. Together they visited various countries throughout five continents. They also shared a love for sports. John was an avid Philadelphia fan, especially the Eagles. He indulged Karen in her love for the Minnesota Vikings, taking her to her first professional football game. John leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Karen two sisters Mary Catherine and Elise, Philadelphia, PA two brothers Robert, Philadelphia, PA and Lionel, Camden/Wyoming, DE; three sisters-in-law, Christine Higgins and H. Estella Hines, Wilmington, DE, Jacqueline Ashford (Michael), Millsboro, DE; three brothers-in-law, Wayne Brewington Sr, Hartley, DE, Stanley Higgins, Jr, Philadelphia, PA; and Terry L. Higgins, Portland, OR; one aunt, Ethel Higgins, Dover, DE; his best friend and “military brother” Michael Parker (Deborah), Seffner, FL; Godson Wesley Parker, Seffner, FL and Goddaughter Ajani Ficklin, East Orange, NJ; thirty-two (32) nieces and nephews and a host of grand nieces and nephews; cousins and friends. Due to allergies and medical sensitivities, the family kindly requests all guest attending the viewing or the service refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes, heavy scented lotions, body washes and deodorants. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 am until 11:30 am on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. A committal service will follow in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
