James P. "Jim" Young

James P. “Jim” Young, age 83, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021. Born in New York City on February 18, 1938, Jim was a son of Innes and Helen Behen Young. After college he served in the National Guard and was employed by Aetna Insurance Company. In 1985 he joined the Human Resource Department of Delaware Power and Light, where he remained until he retired in 1998. Jim was optimistic, outgoing, and caring. He was always ready to help when and where needed. Over the years he mentored students at Townsend Elementary School, coordinated the Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army in Middletown, served on the Library Committee for New Castle County, and was a member of the Friends of the Appoquinimink Library Fund Raising Committee for the new library. Jim was an avid reader, an ardent supporter of the University of Delaware Rep Theater, and an enthusiastic fan of the San Francisco Giants. His love for the Giants began when he was a child in New York and continued when they moved west. Jim was a devoted family man. He and his wife, Valerie, would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in December this year. He was proud of his two sons, Larry and Doug, and their achievements. He delighted in time spent with his grandchildren: Victoria, Madalyn, Samantha, Andrew, Kevin, and Emily. He also believed no home is complete without a dog, and generations of Scotties and a Westie filled that role. Jim felt he had been blessed in life, and his life blessed those with whom he shared it. Jim is survived by his wife, Valerie (Secor) Young; sons, Larry Young (Melissa) of Woodbine, MD and Doug Young (Cecilee) of Middletown; brother, Bruce M. Young of Branchburg, NJ; and grandchildren, Victoria, Madalyn, Samantha, Andrew, Kevin and Emily. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 E. Main Street, Middletown, DE. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 am at St. Joseph Parish, 371 E. Main Street, Middletown, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Jim’s name to the Appoquinimink Library Building Fund at Appoquinimink Building Fund, 651 N. Broad Street, Middletown, DE, I9709.
