Horace J. "Joe" Conway

Horace J. “Joe” Conway, age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born on September 27, 1940 in Bryn Mawr, PA to the late Horace Hepburn and Evelyn (Pash) Conway. He graduated from Radnor High School in 1958 and shortly thereafter, enlisted in the Navy. He attended the U.S. Naval School at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois and became an Electronics Technician. Following his training, he served on active duty between 1958 and 1961 aboard the U.S.S. Canberra, CAG-2. He had many fond memories of traveling around the world earning his membership in the “Ancient Order of Magellan” for completing a cruise around the world aboard the Canberra that departed Norfolk, VA on March 3, 1960 and returned on November 25. While aboard the Canberra, he visited countless countries and crossed the equator on April 25, 1960. When asked of all the places he visited which was his favorite, he would always respond, San Diego, California. While in the Navy, Joe played the saxophone in the band. He was a patriot, loved his country, and served with pride and honor. Joe was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1961. Following his service in the military, Joe went on to sell insurance where he met his future wife, and the love of his life, Charlotte. They were married one day after his birthday on September 28, 1968. Shortly after the birth of their son, Brian, in 1969, the family moved to New Castle, DE where he started work as a major appliance salesman. He worked for Silo, Garrett Miller, and Gilberts of West Chester, PA where he retired in 2006. He will always be remembered by his family as a loving, funny (even though his son never understood his humor), positive, and amazingly patient man. He enjoyed building model trains, taking frequent trips to Delaware Park, genealogy, collecting coins, and spending time with his family. More recently, he became instrumental in reuniting his classmates from Radnor High and, and was very proud of a website he created in order to leave behind a legacy for his grandchildren whom he loved very much. He is survived by his son, Brian J. Conway of Middletown; his stepdaughter, Charmaine M. Owens, of Newark; and his two grandchildren, Arlee Mae and Cavan Andrew, both of Middletown. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 noon on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 12 noon. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Face masks will be required for all in attendance.
