Harold R. Blackburn

Born: 9/18/1932 Died: 11/14/2011 Mr. Harold R. Blackburn, Sr., age 79, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011. Mr. Blackburn was born in Chester, PA, on September 18, 1932, son of the late Ernest T. Blackburn and Josephine L. Reynolds Blackburn. A US Army veteran of the Korean War, he served in the Second Division and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in defense of his country. In civilian life, Mr. Blackburn was a stationary engineer by trade. He was employed with the former Electric Hose and Rubber Company and later accepted a position with the University of Delaware, where he retired. An avid and knowledgeable outdoorsman, Mr. Blackburn greatly enjoyed spending time in nature, especially while hunting, fishing, and crabbing. He was an experienced scuba diver as well and a longtime member of the Delaware Underwater Club. A talented marksman, he excelled in skeet shooting competitions. Well known for his jovial personality, Mr. Blackburn delighted in joking with his many friends. He also enjoyed cheering for his favorite team, the Indianapolis Colts. Most of all, he looked forward to spending time with his beloved family, whom he adored. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Virginia “Jinnie” Thomas Blackburn; daughter, Terry L. Markham of Key West, FL; son, Harold “Ray” Blackburn (Vicki) of Smyrna; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Goodwin, granddaughter, Summer Bursler, and sister, Jacqueline Oberly. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Fresenius Medical Care in Middletown for their many kindnesses to Mr. Blackburn during his illness. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, November 18, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, P.O. Box 49, Annandale, VA 22003.
