Grace Dixon Barrett

Grace Dixon Barrett, age 69, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Born in Kennedyville, MD on April 21, 1947, Gracie was the daughter of the late Ollie H. Bill and G. Lorraine (Beamer) Dixon-Boyce. A real estate professional since 1978, she finished her career with Keller-Williams Realtors. Gracie achieved the Graduate Realtors Institute and Council of Residential Specialists designations, which are the highest awards achieved by real estate agents. She was a lifetime member of the New Castle County Million Dollar Club. Additionally, Gracie was affiliated with the National Association of Realtors, the Delaware Association of Realtors and the Maryland Association of Realtors. She served on the Multi-list and Professional Standards Committee for the New Castle Board of Realtors and at the state level, chaired and co-chaired the Delaware Association of Realtors State Convention. Gracie also served as a past vice president for the New Castle County Council of Real Estate Specialists. She also served as an arbitrator for the Delaware Better Business Bureau. In honor of her professional achievements and length of time as a Realtor, Gracie was inducted into the New Castle County Board of Realtor’s Hall of Fame on June 2nd of this year. She was a member of the SOS Sailing Club of Annapolis, MD and the Delaware Historical Society. A longtime member of the Wilmington Ski Club, she served as media chairperson and co-chaired all of the summer water activities. She adored sailing and was one of the first female crew members on Delaware’s tall ship, the Kalmar Nyckel. Gracie spent time aboard the famous replica ship while it was being used in the making of a movie for an Italian film company. A dedicated member of Ogletown Baptist Church, she previously served as a church trustee, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, was a church training teacher and volunteered with the Baptist Young Women. Along with her family, Gracie was a charter member of Friendship Baptist Church in Glasgow, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She was a resident of the Village of Beck’s Pond where she gave of her time and talents by serving as the first president of the maintenance corporation for the community. Gracie especially enjoyed spending time with her sons and their families, reading, fitness, spelunking and especially sailing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, George Edward Eddie Barrett, who died in 1993. Gracie is survived by her sons, Keith Edward and his wife, Debra and Kenneth Scott and Kim; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and brothers, Gene of Lewes, DE, Harvey of Elkton, MD, Billy (Nancy) of Bowling Green, KY and Lonnie (Pat) of Newark, DE. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Friday evening, June 10, 2016 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday morning, June 11, 2016, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
