George Bernard Wallace, Sr.

George Bernard Wallace, Sr., age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on on Saturday, December 24, 2022. Born in Dover, DE on February 15, 1932, he was a son of the late Harold and Verna (Grace) Wallace. As a child his family operated a farm in Felton, Delaware before moving to their dairy farm in Hartly, Delaware. George proudly served in the United States Navy from 1955-1959. He served as a radioman aboard his beloved ship the USS Hyades. Soon after his honorable discharge, George went to work for the State of Delaware as a two-way radio technician. He held the position of supervisor for many years at the shop behind State Police Troop II on State Road. From there he was promoted to Manager of State Communications, where he was responsible for all State of Delaware radio systems. After laying the foundation for Delaware’s current 800 MHz system, George retired in 1993 after 34 years, due to health concerns. George was one of the founders of the Red Lion Evangelical Association and the Red Lion Christian Academy. He served on Red Lion’s Board of Trustees for over 25 years. With his electronics background, he also led the Red Lion Radio and Tape Ministry for many years. George spent much of his time in the basement of his home editing Sunday sermons and getting them out to radio stations. George’s real passion was personal evangelism. George and his close friend, Reverend Irvin Pusey, traveled to Coral Ridge Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to become certified trainers with Evangelism Explosion. Through his obedience to God, George trained countless individuals how to share the love of Jesus and the Free Gift of eternal life. George was a life member of the Christiana Fire Company. He served many years in various Chief positions and became known as a solid fireground officer. When Christiana opened Station 6 on Porter Road, George was the first to serve as Assistant Chief at that station. On an early Sunday morning in 1965 neighbors of the Glendale development banged on George’s door to alert him to a house on fire a few doors up from him. With heavy fire in the living room, a 7-year-old girl was trapped in the bedroom. George located a ladder in a neighbor’s garage and broke out the bedroom window. In heavy smoke conditions he entered the window to search for the child. He located her under the bed and removed her through the window. For his heroic actions, George was voted Fireman of the Year by the Delaware State Fire Chief Association. The friendships and strong bonds he formed with the incredible men and women of the Christiana Fire Company lasted throughout his lifetime. In retirement, George and Anna traveled up and down the east coast in one of their many RVs. George loved the excitement of planning the trips. He especially loved taking his grandchildren to Disney World. He continued camping until the age of 87. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold and Alvin. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Anna; daughter, Sharon Bielicki (Tony); son, George (Dawn); grandchildren, Joshua, Katie, Jill, George III, Faith, Sarah, Grace, and Anna; sister, Phyllis; and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 11 am on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Bible Fellowship Church of Newark, 808 Old Baltimore Pike, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
