Francis James Winnington

Francis James Winnington, age 62, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Born in Wilmington, DE on October 20, 1955, he was a son of the late James and Dorothy (Hafner) Winnington. Following graduation from Delcastle High School, Francis enlisted with the Army National Guard. Throughout his career he worked in welding and pipefitting, a trade he proudly learned from his father. For the past several years, he was a dedicated supervisor/manager with Apex Piping in Newport. Previously he worked at Potts Welding for 30 years. Francis was an avid outdoorsmen who enjoyed taking a seven mile walk everyday, regardless of the weather. He also enjoyed fishing with his sons, especially at the Outer Banks. Francis loved to play and watch baseball and you could always find him cheering on the Blue Rocks. He was a dedicated family man, who especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. He will always be remembered as a loving brother, father, grandfather and dear friend to many. In addition to his parents, Francis was preceded in death by his brothers, John Winnington and Dennis Winnington; sister, Geraldine Matthews; brother-in-law, Alfonse Lugano; and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his children, Kimberly Winnington, Casi Short (Joe MacDonald), Philip Winnington and Luke Winnington; brothers, Jimmy Winnington (Mary), Joseph Winnington (Cathy) and Thomas Winnington (Michelle); sisters, Dorothy Hill (Joseph), Bernadette Lugano, Mary Ann Lacey (Richard), Catherine Gott (Francis), Elizabeth Kohl (Jerome) and Patricia Saxton (Charles); brother-in-law, Mervin Matthews; grandsons, Avan Short and Avery MacDonald; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 pm until 4 pm on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A second visitation will be held the following day, Monday, February 26, 2018 from 9:30 am until 10:45 am at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, DE, where Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.
