Clyde A. Roberts

Clyde A. Roberts, age 91, Port Penn, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Port Penn, DE on February 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Earl Hatch and Jessie (Blackwell) Roberts. Clyde served in the U.S. Army during the WWII conflict. He graduated from Philadelphia College of Bible, Baltimore Institute of Photography, University of Delaware in Psychology and he was a Lifelong student of Theology. Clyde retired as a government employee and was a highly respected commercial fishermen. Clyde was a lifelong resident of Port Penn and very active in his community. He was a past member of the National Historical Society, Port Penn Historical Society, The Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program and he was appointed to the Advisory Council on Tidal Finfisheries. He assisted the United States Department of Interior Biolgist’s in their study of commercial fishing operations of the Atlantic sturgeon. Clyde regularly demonstrated Shad deboning for the Port Penn Wetland Folk Festival. He was often quoted and articles written about him in Outdoor Delaware, News Journal and several books. He recently retired to Florida spending some of the happiest days of his life. He will be remembered as a loving father, brother and dear friend to many. In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine A. Roberts; sons, Clyde Roberts, Jr., David W. Roberts and Thomas Roberts; and sister Edna Brown. He is survived by his children, James P. Roberts (Karen) of Orange City, FL and Catherine Roberts of Newark; and sister Loretta Logan of Newark; daughter in law Jeannie Van Dan of Newark; and niece Nona (Bob) Wilson, Newark, Grandchildren David D. Roberts, Tommy Roberts, Michael A. Poole, Jamie Guiles, Jennifer Price, Robyn Roberts and Michelle Roberts-Jones and a host of Great Grandchildren. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 noon on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 12 noon. Interment will be follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn, DE.
