Alfred J. Pautler

*** Updated as of September 23, 2021 *** Alfred J. Pautler, age 94, of Lincoln University, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Born in Lancaster, NY on December 3, 1926, he was a son of the late Edward V. and Celena C. (nee Scheier) Pautler. Alfred was a 1944 alumnus of St. Mary’s High School in his hometown. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII as a Combat Aircrew man. Alfred’s professional career began in 1946 when he was employed by Gould National Batteries. He specialized in lead acid batteries for the USN and foreign submarine markets, working in the areas of service, engineering, research, production, and marketing for 45 years with over six years of consulting. Alfred also managed Oceanographic Battery Co. and ACC-Batt, Inc., after retirement. He had a fantastic memory and loved to tell stories of his travels and the interesting individuals he met along the way. (He even charmed Admiral Rickover!) Alfred held memberships in the Knights of Columbus Council #10668; Navy League; Naval Submarine League; Trenton, NJ Elks #105; and American Legion Post #185. He was a RCIA sponsor while a member of St. Francis by the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Hilton Head, SC. He was a current member of St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church in Newark, DE. While Alfred had many accomplished successes, the most important thing to him was family. He adored and cherished his wife Geraldine in addition to his children, Craig, Philip, and Kristel. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, tracing his family tree, and tinkering – there wasn’t a thing he couldn’t fix. Alfred embraced life, always had a smile on his face, and everyone he met quickly became his friend. Many will miss his annual phone call on their birthday. In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by his son, Craig Pautler of Chanhassen, MN. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Geraldine (nee Pfender) Pautler; son, Philip Pautler (Maria) of Newark; daughter, Kristel (nee Pautler) Weldon (John) of Apex, NC; grandchildren, Nicholas Pautler, Carleigh Weldon, and Aidan Weldon. The family would like to thank caregiver Helen and Willow Tree Hospice, especially Carolyn, for their compassionate care of Alfred. A Funeral Mass will be held for both Geraldine and Alfred at 11 am on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at St. Margaret of Scotland R.C. Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, DE 19702. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alfred’s memory to St. Margaret of Scotland R.C. Church, 2431 Frazer Rd., Newark, DE 19702, or Willow Tree Hospice, 616 E. Cypress St., Kennett Square, PA 19348, or a veterans’ organization of your choice. In addition, as a memorial, Alfred requested that you consider a loving, thoughtful act towards one of your fellow human beings.
