Alfina Seelig

Alfina Seelig, age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, surrounded by her loving family, after courageously battling a long illness. Alfina was born on May 26, 1943, in Swedesboro, NJ, where she grew up with her parents, Sal and Angie Vasta and her brother Ben. Alfina graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School in Gloucester City, NJ, where she was a member of the Bells of St. Mary’s Drum & Bugle Corp. Alfina continued her education at Goldey Beacom College, where she earned an associate degree in business. Following graduation, she moved to Wilmington, DE, and worked for the Wilmington Trust Company. While living in Wilmington she met her husband, George, with whom she celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary earlier this year. After marrying in 1967 and moving to Newark, DE, a few years later, Alfina dedicated herself to raising 3 very active sons. As her sons became more and more independent, she decided to return to the workplace, finding a second home at the University of Delaware Library Administration office. Alfina worked at the University Library for over 30 years until her retirement in 2015. She cherished her supervisory career at the library, as well as the many friendships she made there. Alfina was a loving mother who always put her family first and was always there when needed. She was a strong-willed person who continuously offered amazing advice with a perfect mix of compassion, sternness, and love. Her happiest and proudest achievements, however, were her 4 grandchildren who lovingly called her “Nanny.” They enjoyed many summers in Bethany Beach, DE, with their Nanny. From trolley rides to walks on the beach, the wonderful memories will be treasured forever. Alfina was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Newark, DE. Her family would like to thank Dr. Pamela Simpson and her staff at the Helen Graham Center. They also want to thank Accent Hospice Care, especially Amber who was so generous with her attention and caring during this difficult time. Alfina was predeceased by her father and mother, Sal and Angie Vasta. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, George; sons, Ken (Colleen) of Logan Twp., NJ, Gary (Sharon) of Smyrna, DE, and Keith of Newark, DE; brother, Ben Vasta (Alesia) of Clementon, NJ; grandchildren, Samantha, Kenny, Evan, and Maya; and by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00 am to 10:15 am on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Holy Family R.C. Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
